Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy services across Fiona Stanley and Fremantle hospitals aim to restore, maintain and make the most of a patient’s mobility and function following an illness, disease or injury.
Physiotherapy interventions can include:
- education
- manual therapy
- movement re-education
- physical intervention
- use of electro-physical equipment.
Physiotherapy is part of our Allied Health Service.
Physiotherapy services are provided to:
- inpatients who are likely to have improved outcomes or fast-tracked pathways as a direct result of physiotherapy services
- outpatients who require physiotherapy services that aren’t available in the community or a non-tertiary hospital site in their local catchment area.
Physiotherapy services available at Fiona Stanley Hospital include:
- assessing a patient’s functional ability, level of impairment and medical history
- identifying areas for functional improvement and planning of rehabilitation goals – read more about rehabilitation (Healthy WA)
- treating and evaluating a patient’s progress towards rehabilitation goals
- educating families and carers to better understand a patient’s mobility and functional deficits and what they can do to support planned treatment.
Physiotherapy services at Fremantle Hospital are provided to hospital inpatients and through outpatient services to patients within the Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospital Group catchment area.
Clinical services include:
- aged care rehabilitation and assessment
- respiratory services
- medical surgical services
- falls rehabilitation
- geriatrics rehabilitation
- amputee rehabilitation
- cardiac rehabilitation
- continence and pelvic floor dysfunction
- hand therapy
- musculoskeletal injury rehabilitation
- neurological rehabilitation
- orthopaedic surgery rehabilitation
- pulmonary rehabilitation.
The department is also a training facility for undergraduate and postgraduate physiotherapy students.

How your body manages your pregnancy and how it recovers depends on many factors.

Supporting recovery after prostate surgery
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in WA. One treatment is the surgical removal of the prostate, which is known as a prostatectomy.
If you have had a prostatectomy, a series of short videos is available to support your recovery and outcomes.

Referring to Fremantle Hospital
Outpatient Physiotherapy accepts GP referrals for clients within the Fremantle Hospital catchment area.
Outpatient referrals are accepted from GPs, consultants and allied health professionals via e-referral or post. Patients referred from a GP may be limited to a maximum of 8 visits within a 12-month period. Please fax outpatient referral letters to 9431 2131 or mail to Physiotherapy, Fremantle Hospital, PO Box 480, Fremantle.
Inpatient referrals are accepted from medical, nursing and allied health professionals by phone, e-referral, fax or ward pager.

Location
Our Allied Health outpatient clinics are located at the eastern end of the main Fiona Stanley Hospital building. You can access them off the main concourse on the ground floor.
Inpatient services are located throughout the hospital campus.
The main entrance to the hospital is accessed off Robin Warren Drive – see the Fiona Stanley Hospital map (PDF 1MB).

Specialties requiring a seven-day service are resourced to provide this.
Extended working hours exist in the following areas:
- Acute Medical Unit – 7:00am – 7:00pm
- Emergency Department – 8:00am – 9:00pm
- Intensive Care Unit – 24 hours for physiotherapy and on-call service for Social Work
