Inpatient mental health services

Inpatient mental health services

Our inpatient units at Fremantle Hospital provide short-term treatment to adults (18 – 65 years) and older adult (65 years and older) living within the SMHS mental health catchment (PDF 262KB) during an acute phase of mental illness.

We also offer additional specialist mental health care at our Cockburn Health facility.

Mental health inpatients are admitted to a ward under the care of a consultant psychiatrist who is part of a broader multidisciplinary treating team. Our services are responsive to the individual needs of mental health consumers and include a range of therapeutic interventions focusing on the patient’s strengths, skills and goals to support their recovery.

Our mental health wards:
  • provide a safe, supportive environment where you can recover
  • give you a chance to re-establish control and responsibility in a supportive setting
  • allow staff to assess your risks, wellness, and how treatment works for you.

Fremantle Hospital mental health wards include:

  • Waalitj (Ward 4.1) – Psychiatric intensive care unit
  • Maali (Ward 4.2) – Adult open ward
  • Wardong (Ward 4.3) – Older adult ward
  • Djiti djiti (Ward 5.1) – Adult open ward

Cockburn Health mental health wards include:

  • Kogolup (Ward 1) – Adult women only

If you speak a language other than English, an interpreter will be provided either face-to-face or via telephone.

How to access our services

Referrals from health professionals

Health professionals can arrange access to the:

  • Fremantle Hosptial inpatient mental health service by contacting Assessment and Treatment Team (ATT) Triage
  • Cockburn Health Womens only inpatient unit by completing the Cockburn Health referral form (PDF 154KB).

Self-referral

People who present to the mental health service without a referral and who are acutely unwell will be triaged by ATT before being treated or referred to other services.

Support for carers

Carers have the main responsibility for care when service providers are not there. They are frequently responsible for providing care to consumers who are acutely unwell.

The mental health service actively partners with carers to make sure that their family member or friend receives the best possible care.

Read more about support for mental health carers.

The mental health service ensures that carers and the essential role they play is identified at first contact, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Relevant information brochures for family, friends and consumers are also provided in the inpatient areas.
