Celebrating excellence at the 2023 FSFHG Caritas Awards
Nursing and midwifery staff across Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group (FSFHG) recently came together to celebrate the annual FSFHG Nursing and Midwifery Caritas Awards.
Recognising and rewarding outstanding nursing and midwifery contributions across the group, the awards celebrated the unwavering commitment and dedication of staff.
Acting Area Director of Nursing and Midwifery Amanda Hannaway said the FSFHG Caritas Awards provide a valuable opportunity to recognise nursing and midwifery excellence throughout the group.
"We have so many dedicated nursing and midwifery colleagues who not only provide the highest levels of patient-centred care, but are also leaders in their field, driving innovations in clinical practice to ensure our health service provides excellent health care every time.
"Congratulations to all nominees and category winners; the calibre of candidates and examples was exceptional and made me feel proud to work amongst such talented individuals and teams," she said.

Assistant in Nursing (AIN) of the Year – Dawn Boxer
Dawn's unwavering commitment, compassion, and outstanding leadership as an AIN has significantly contributed to the wellbeing of patients and the success of the ward. Dawn's impact extends beyond patient care where she actively collaborates with the multidisciplinary team, is a champion in comprehensive care and has significantly contributed to reducing hospital-acquired complications. In addition, Dawn’s involvement in urinary tract infection (UTI) reduction strategies and falls prevention initiatives further highlight her proactive and holistic approach to patient care.
Graduate of the Year – Rein Icaro
Rein has made an excellent start in his nursing career, becoming a well-liked graduate nurse. Eager to learn and grow in his surgical skills, Rein’s enthusiasm towards his professional development is commendable and shows his appreciation of the complexity of the nursing profession. His warmth, compassion and genuine care for his patients is inspiring, and his patients are truly grateful for his kindness.
Excellence in Clinical Practice – Dorothy Ziyebangwa
Dorothy has been a driving force for positive change on the geriatric rehabilitation ward at Fremantle Hospital, and her dedication to improving patient care is both inspiring and transformative. Dorothy recently led a key initiative focused on enhancing the well-being of elderly patients, initiating and championing a 'Hydration Blitz' Quality Improvement project to improve patient outcomes through hydration.
Excellence in Leadership – Jo Reid
As Service 4 Nurse Coordinator, Jo strives in her personal professional development to gain the skills required to promote development within her teams. Jo has delivered a number of initiatives to lead teams towards organisational improvement by empowering them to create solutions to improve patient care and enhancing team performance. Jo's leadership has proved to influence and improve nursing and midwifery practice across FSFHG through innovation and change.
Excellence in Education – Biljana (Billie) Vojnovic
Clinical Educator Billie is described as the heart of Ward 7D. Seeing the potential in all her staff, Billie encourages everyone to strive to be their very best self. Through her extensive education and nursing career, Billie is a passionate educator who looks forward to upskilling and sharing knowledge with staff. An advocate for recognising excellence, Billie has created a culture where nurses are motivated, positive and inspired to learn more.
Excellence in Research – Eric Lim
Identifying a research priority in mental health nursing, Eric is focused on providing additional mental health services for staff to meet the unique and complex needs of people with a mental illness. Eric has gone above and beyond to ensure all mental health nurses across the group are aware of his research, identifying key priorities that will make a significant impact to the future of mental health nursing in Western Australia. Eric's level of commitment, collaboration and considered approach will not only improve the health and wellbeing of patients and staff but advance the knowledge and skills within the service.

Dorothy is an outstanding nurse who embodies the principles of compassion, excellence, and innovation. Her unwavering commitment to improving the lives of elderly patients and her collaborative approach make her a shining example of the values of South Metropolitan Health Service.
