Fremantle Hospital's Medical Imaging department is now home to a brand new, state-of-the-art computed tomography (CT) scanner.

The new Siemens Force CT scanner features two X-ray tubes and detectors, enabling the scanner to create rapid, clear images.

Patients previously unable to remain still during a CT scan can now receive high-quality, diagnostic imaging thanks to the advance technology in use. Imaging of a heart can now be completed within a single heartbeat and pulmonary imaging can be undertaken without the need for the patient to hold their breath.

The advanced unit enables clinicians to obtain spectral information such as renal stone composition, gout and bone bruising in acute trauma.

Officially commissioned in early November, Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group Executive Director Neil Doverty said the new CT scanner will benefit both patients and clinicians at Fremantle Hospital.

"The new state-of-the-art CT scanner will improve patient access to receive high quality, consistent imaging, further expanding capacity across the South Metropolitan Health Service network," Neil said.

"Importantly for patients wanting to receive care closer to home, the new scanner eliminates the need for them to be transferred to Fiona Stanley Hospital.

"Patients can instead be imaged to the advanced clinical needs and highest standards onsite at Fremantle Hospital."
