Our care

Our highly specialised staff support patients to achieve their goals with the aim of a safe and supported discharge into the community.

After undergoing a comprehensive assessment, a structured, individualised rehabilitation program is developed for each patient. Read more about your rehabilitation journey.

Using proven research-based methods, contemporary facilities and equipment, our team encourage patients to lead their own rehabilitation, including participation in therapy and opportunities to do as much for themselves as possible. This includes regular goal setting meetings with members of their interdisciplinary team to ensure therapy and rehabilitation is targeted towards the patient’s needs.

Regular therapy and education sessions inform and empower patients to manage their own care. Family members are welcome to attend sessions with the patient’s consent.

Ongoing support is provided as appropriate through referrals to:

  • Spinal Outreach Service (SOS)
  • to community-based service providers including:
    • Rehabilitation in the Home (RITH) (external site)
    • National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) (external site)
    • My Aged Care (external site)
    • Insurance Commission of Western Australia (ICWA) (external site).

Commode types and features

A commode chair combines the functionality of both a shower chair and toilet seat.

It helps people with mobility problems reduce the number of transfers required to safely perform personal care tasks such as showering or toileting. This also reduces the risk of slips and falls.

Refer a patient

WA Health staff can refer patients for our services by submitting an e-referral to Rehabilitation Medicine/Spinal Medicine.

If there is no access to e-referral (for example, if you are referring from a private hospital) the patient can be referred:

  • via the Central Referral Service (external site)
  • by phoning the Fiona Stanley Hospital Helpdesk on 6152 2222 and asking for the spinal rehabilitation registrar.

Community referrals can be made via GP referral or via the Spinal Outreach Services referral pathways.

Sexual Wellness Service referrals

WA Health staff can refer a patient to this service by e-referral, under ‘Rehabilitation Medicine - Sexual Rehab’.
