Collaborative 'Sound decisions' education session – Thursday 12 March 2026

Bridging ENT, audiology and primary care in hearing health management

Collaborative 'Sound decisions' education session – Thursday 12 March 2026

General practitioners and public and private hearing health professionals (audiologists and audiometrists) are invited to attend a collaborative session bridging community care and services delivered by the Statewide Tertiary Adult Audiology Service.

The service provides adult audiological assessments and hearing (aural) rehabilitation services across the public hospital system, including:

  • Fiona Stanley Hospital
  • Fremantle Hospital
  • Royal Perth Hospital
  • Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

Designed to strengthen partnerships and enhance patient outcomes, this evidence-based and inspiring education session will:

  • showcase precision medicine, including cutting-edge research and clinical applications of brain activity recordings to personalise cochlear implant programming and improve outcomes
  • clarify access pathways by demystifying referral guidelines, candidacy criteria (including for hearing implants), the triage process, and outlining how to navigate open channels of communication for seamless patient care
  • amplify the patient voice by sharing strategies for improving communication and accessibility, including the chance to hear directly from an auditory brainstem implant (ABI) recipient about their public health journey.

Also presenting at the session will be Hannah McPierzie, who combines her lived experience of deafblindness with more than 15 years in disability advocacy to translate community insights into clinical practice. Hannah will share crucial strategies for breaking down communication barriers and fostering true accessibility.
