Rottnest Island Nursing Post

Rottnest Island Nursing Post

The Rottnest Island Nursing Post provides accident and emergency care to Rottnest Island residents and visitors.

Our dedicated team includes a nurse practitioner/clinical nurse manager, clinical nurses and an administration clerk.

Over the busy summer school holidays and Easter holiday weekends, the nursing team is supported by a Fiona Stanley Hospital Emergency Department consultant. During some other island events, additional medical and nursing support is available.

Our nurses have extensive knowledge and skills in advanced assessment, diagnosis, nursing care and evaluation. The Nursing Post is equipped to offer Advanced Life Support (ALS) and all registered clinical nurses are ALS competent.

We use a specially-equipped ambulance to retrieve patients, when necessary, and patients who need advanced ongoing care are transferred to mainland tertiary hospitals.

We work closely with the Rottnest Island Authority, WA Police and the Rottnest Island Fire and Emergency Service to provide coordinated emergency responses.

We also provide support services such as limited x-ray, pathology and medication supplies.

Patient information

Visitors to the island should bring adequate supplies of their own prescription medications and a small first aid kit. There is no longer a pharmacy service on the island.

Treatment charges apply for some patients

Treatment charges apply for those who:

  • do not have a valid Medicare card
  • are international visitors (HealthyWA) whose home country does not have a reciprocal healthcare agreement with Australia.

Information for GPs

The Nursing Post has limited material resources and patients requiring dressings should be advised to bring adequate supplies for the duration of their stay.

Referrals

Enquiries about patient referrals should be made to the Clinical Nurse Manager, accompanied by a detailed written referral.

The Clinical Nurse Manager/Nurse Practitioner can be contacted by phoning the Fiona Stanley Hospital Helpdesk on 6152 2222.

Education/training opportunities

Nurse student placements may be considered – please contact the Clinical Nurse Manager for details.
