Day Admissions Centre (Fremantle Hospital)

Day Admissions Centre (Fremantle Hospital)

The Fremantle Hospital Day Admissions Centre (DAC) focuses on the following elective surgeries:

  • general
  • ear, nose and throat
  • gynaecology
  • hand
  • ophthalmology
  • oral
  • orthopaedic
  • urology
  • vascular.

The centre also enables diagnostic and assessment services for gastroenterology and radiological patients who require a day admission to hospital.

Types of surgery admission

Same day surgery refers to patients who have surgery or a procedure and return home on the same day. If you are a ‘same day’ patient, you must arrange for a responsible adult to pick you up and provide care for 24-hours following your surgery or procedure. You are not allowed to drive following your surgery or procedure.

Day of surgery admission refers to patients who are admitted overnight or longer after their surgery or procedure.

Before your admission

Before your surgery you will be contacted by the Pre-admission Clinic to arrange a nursing and anaesthetic assessment. This enables us to:

  • get a detailed history of your health
  • do preliminary investigations such as blood and medical imaging tests
  • answer any questions that you may have regarding your:
    • admission
    • hospital stay
    • surgical procedure
    • pain relief
    • discharge process when leaving the DAC or ward.

On the day of your admission

Read what to bring to hospital with you.

Your personal details will be checked by a clerk before you are escorted to the centre’s patient area. You will be admitted by a nurse who will:

  • review your medical history
  • record your vital signs, such as your temperature, blood pressure and heart rate
  • answer any questions you may have
  • prepare you for your elective surgery or procedure.

Only your registered carer or interpreter is able to accompany you into the centre's patient area. Family members or friends are not able to sit with you inside the centre and are encouraged to wait in the waiting room or visit the hospital’s Ladies Auxiliary kiosk on Level 5 (B Block).

Following your elective surgery or procedure

You will either:

  • be transferred to the Short Stay Surgical Unit or B8N, which is a medical/surgical ward
  • return to the Day Admissions Centre for a minimum of one hour so nursing staff can monitor your recovery.

Post-operative care information and follow-up advice will be provided prior to your discharge.

A nurse will inform your support person when you can be collected to return home.
