Audiology testing

Audiology testing

Patients receiving audiology services at the Statewide Tertiary Adult Audiology Service undergo ear and hearing assessments as part of their care and treatment.

These painless assessments help determine:

  • what is the softest sound you can hear across different pitches (your hearing level)
  • the type and severity of your hearing problems
  • your ability to understand speech.

An audiologist (a specialist in hearing loss and balance disorders) will perform the assessments. All you need to do is sit in a soundproof booth and listen to different tones important to your ability to hear.

Common audiology tests and assessments

On the day of the appointment, your audiologist will determine which of the following procedures are relevant to your needs. The tests can also be modified for children.

  • An otoscopy is when an audiologist examines your external ear canal for abnormalities or presence of wax using an otoscope or ear torch.
  • Tympanometry shows how well your eardrum and middle ear are functioning. It can show if you have a ruptured or abnormal eardrum, fluid in your ear, etc.
  • Audiometry uses tones at different volumes and pitches to establish the softest level that sounds can be detected.
  • Speech discrimination determines which speech sounds you can hear and how loud these sounds need to be for you to hear them clearly.

A copy of your test results can be provided to you on the day and sent to GP and/or specialist upon request.
