Anaesthesia, Pain and Perioperative Medicine

Anaesthesia, Pain and Perioperative Medicine

The department of Anaesthesia, Pain and Perioperative Medicine provides 24-hour, comprehensive anaesthetic services across both Fiona Stanley and Fremantle hospitals.

Our anaesthetists provide safe and effective general, regional or local anaesthesia and sedation for patients undergoing surgery and other procedures.

Anaesthetists are also trained to provide pain management for patients who are recovering from surgery and for pregnant women in labour. Read more about anaesthesia (Healthy WA) and anaesthetics for children (Healthy WA).

We perform over 30,000 procedures per year for adult and paediatric patients who require:

  • emergency and elective surgical, diagnostic or therapeutic procedures
  • obstetric services
  • acute pain management
  • perioperative medical assessment and support
  • resuscitation and crisis management.

We also provide specialist pain medicine outpatient services for patients with chronic pain conditions.

Fellowship opportunities

The department has a number of subspecialty anaesthetic fellowship positions available each year which are open to local and international candidates at the end of their training program.
