Good news for families this winter – WA’s successful FluMist needle-free influenza vaccination program has now been expanded to include young people aged 12 to 17 years. This builds on the program introduced earlier this year for children aged 2 to 11 years, giving more families access to a simple, needle-free option for protecting against influenza.

The expansion comes as respiratory illnesses continue to increase across the community during winter. School-aged children and teenagers are key drivers of influenza transmission, often spreading the virus within households, schools and the wider community. Increasing vaccination coverage in this age group will help reduce transmission and protect those most vulnerable to severe illness, including infants, older people and those with underlying health conditions.

FluMist is available free of charge as part of WA's free flu vaccination program until 31 July 2026. The needle-free nasal spray may be particularly appealing for children and teenagers who experience needle anxiety.

Community members aged six months and over can access a free influenza vaccination at Fiona Stanley Hospital's Community Flu Vaccination Clinic.

Location: Fiona Stanley Hospital, located on the main concourse near the outpatient clinic entrance, 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. See the hospital map (PDF1MB).
Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 4.00pm

There’s no need to book ndash; simply turn up and the team will help you complete your consent form or you can complete the consent form online (external site).

The clinic offers both the traditional influenza vaccine and FluMist for eligible children and young people.

Protect yourself, your family and your community this winter by getting vaccinated as soon as possible. Vaccination remains the best protection against serious influenza illness and hospitalisation.
