Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) Consultant Neurologist, Merrilee Needham, was recently appointed to the senior leadership role of Medical Director at the Perron Institute.

Western Australia's longest established medical research institute, the Perron Institute undertakes cutting-edge research on a broad spectrum of neurological conditions with a focus on partnering with patients to better understand their diseases, identify treatment targets and facilitate participation in clinical trials.

Previously conducting extensive neuromuscular research, Merilee's particular interest is in the form of myositis known as Inclusion Body Myositis, which saw the development of a myositis biobank and the Australian Myositis Registry.

Well recognised globally for her clinical and research contributions, Merrilee is also highly respected for her patient-centred, personalised approach to patient care within the South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS).

"This personalised approach is essential in supporting people with neuromuscular conditions such as Inclusion Body Myositis," Merrilee said.

"A big picture goal is to create stronger integration between clinical services and scientific research.

"This begins with the clinical care of patients, allowing them to be part of scientific discoveries, and then bringing these discoveries back to patients through clinical trials.

"The ultimate aim is to ensure research is patient-centred and relevant, ultimately improving outcomes for our community."

Perron Institute Chief Executive Officer, Steve Arnott, welcomed Merrilee to the new role and the opportunity to oversee the start of an exciting new era

"The Medical Director contributes to the values and broad mission of the Perron Institute by bringing expert clinical and research knowledge to our organisation," Steve said.

"As a member of the leadership team, the Medical Director plays a key part in strategic planning for the clinics and clinical trial services, and advising the CEO and Board."

Merrilee takes over as Medical Director from Neurologist, David Blacker, who served in the role for over a decade.

Congratulations Merrilee on your appointment.
