Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group (FSFHG) Nurse Unit Manager, Clare Bradshaw knows the Home Hospital (formerly known as HiTH) service all too well both as a clinician, and after being referred to the service as a patient in her recent recovery from a large, inoperable, axillary abscess.

"The abscess was not responding to oral antibiotics," Clare said.

"So, after completing an assessment, the Home Hospital medical staff admitted me to the virtual Home Hospital ward where I had intravenous antibiotic treatment in my own home."

The Home Hospital service, which is now offered to patients in the catchment areas of Fiona Stanley and Fremantle hospitals, allows existing patients to receive acute care supported by telehealth in the comfort of their own home, away from a hospital setting.

"As a single mother, having treatment at home instead of in hospital was ideal and assisted in my family life and quick recovery," Clare said.

Offering a great patient experience and hospital grade care, the service utilises skilled medical staff, hospital-equivalent technologies, equipment, and medication to care for patients in their familiar home environment surrounded by friends and family, as a substitution for hospital accommodation.

"I felt safe with the excellent care delivered by the Home Hospital staff which meant a quicker recovery so I could still go on my holiday with my sons," Clare said.

The service also benefits the health service by reducing the use of hospital-based beds for patients who can be cared for equally at home and in their community, reducing hospital length of stay and emergency department presentations.

Available to existing, eligible FSFHG patients, the Home Hospital service is available from 8am – 8pm with after-hours emergency telephone support for existing patients.

Existing FSFHG patients can ask their treating clinicians if they may be eligible for the service.
