Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) Colorectal Fellow Dr Amanda Nikolic is helping junior surgeons with their studies through her educational podcast ‘First Incision’.

Streamed more than 250,000 times, Amanda designed her podcast to help her colleagues prepare for and pass their general surgery Fellowship Royal Australia College of Surgeons (FRACS) exams.

"Four years ago, while studying for my own fellowship exams I searched for podcasts to assist with exam study but found little surgical-related information," Dr Amanda said.

"So, this motivated me to create my own podcast."

With over 100 episodes, the podcast series correspond to different modules from the surgical curriculum including breast surgery, exam specific episodes, upper gastrointestinal surgery, colorectal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, endocrine surgery, trauma, skin and soft tissue, vascular, anatomy (limb), surgical oncology, and the critically ill surgical patient.

"The podcast was a way for me to communicate about the curriculum and create a community to learn alongside. I didn't expect it to grow as much as it has but am glad it has been of help to my colleagues.

"Additionally, because of the podcast, I've been asked to be part of surgical committees, speak at national conferences and am grateful for the surgical networking opportunities it has afforded me," Dr Amanda said.

You can listen to the podcast on Apple Podcasts (external link).
